"Okay, I did not like the premise of the story – all about True Love predictions and all. It was just too silly for words and everything got “out-of-hand wacky.” However, I loved this story overall and had a good time reading it as there was so much to enjoy and my interest was always up. Had a hard time deciding how to rate this because of the huge contrast between the silly theme and the actual telling, but finally decided that it rated a 3 (excellent) because it was so much fun to read."
This wonderful review comes from Donna D. at her totally fun website that you should all go and check out sometime.
So, why do I like this review so much--enough to put it on my website despite the fact she called Make Me a Match's premise "too silly for words"? (Hey--just you wait--this is only the first romance book written in the One True Love series so far!)
Well, I've been thinking a lot about reviews, good, bad, indifferent. Reviews seem to fall into three different categories.
1) People who LOVE the book. I LOVE these people. (Even if they are mostly related to me.) They are "Stunning!" "Amazing!" "I just can't put these people down!" As soon as I'm a famous, rich, made-it author, I will send them all chocolate. Now, I just eat all the chocolate myself as I'm a little nervous still about this writing books thing...but I'm getting off the point...
2) Okay, back on track: the second kind of reveiwer. These are people who kinda like the book, but explain that it's not what they expect or enjoy. These people say things like, "it's more of a chic lit than a romance." Or, "it's funny and well-written, but not my kind of thing." Whatever. How can you argue with that? Next time, send me an e-mail and I'll write a book just for you. Oh dear. I"m getting testy. Better have some more chocolate...
3) Ah, that's better. Now we're at the third kind of reviewer. These are people like Donna who think, "a gypsy psychic? what the f@@@. That is so lame." But they read it anyway, and--here's the crucial part--they let the good story and fun writing change their minds. They're open to anything. This is so unusual, that I just had to give Donna a huge plug and a big thanks. I'm a little bummed that Finn didn't win Donna's "hunk of the month" contest, though....but Kelley St. John (whose Ethan won the contest) is also with Warner and is my buddy...so I'll have to give a nod her way.
I think I like these third types of reviews so much because I know so many people who don't ever read romance novels. They assume they're all trash (certainly not!) and pure sex (sadly, not). But with a review like Donna's, maybe some of them might give it a try. Who knows, it might turn them on...um, make them interested, I mean... in a whole new kind of thing. And once you read one romance book written in a series, hopefully, you'll read more and more and more!
Anyway, I'll post a few more of these "non-rave" reviews as soon as I get permission from their authors. And if you have something honest to say, bring it on. I love to hear from everyone. Even if what you have to say is just too silly for words.
Happy reading!
